If you’re moving to an apartment in a new city or state, chances are it’s time to brush up on your cell phone etiquette and even the laws governing use. You don’t want to give new co-workers or neighbors the wrong impression. And, you really don’t want to find yourself on the wrong end of the law. Maybe it’s time to commit to being more courteous and cautious when it comes to your cell phone usage.

To help you get a handle on cell phone etiquette, let’s take a look at some common situations where cell phone usage can make you look less than courteous. Cell phone use is never appropriate when:

You are Driving – Picking up a phone to call out, accept a call or even text is a big no-no if you’re behind the wheel. In some locations, it can even land you a big ticket from a police officer. To avoid problems here, pull over if you absolutely must take or make a call. Cell phone usage while driving is just plain dangerous. Don’t do it!

You are in Line at a Store – It is terribly rude to have a cell phone up to your ear while a cashier is trying to check you out of line. If a call comes in and you have to take it, step out of line. Better yet, ignore the call and return it once you are done with your business.

When You’re Out with People – Whether you’re on a date, with colleagues or out with friends, taking 15 calls during an outing is just plain rude. If you’re expecting a very important call, say so at the beginning of the engagement and turn the phone to vibrate. If the call comes in, excuse yourself and take it. Otherwise, just turn off the phone until you’re done.

When You’re in a Restaurant Alone or Otherwise – Nothing is more annoying than hearing someone else yack on the phone while you’re trying to eat. You probably don’t like this and neither do other people. Turn the phone off when you’re in a restaurant to avoid all problems.

When You’re at the Movies – This is a huge no-no. In fact, some people think it should come with a ticket just like driving. If you want to go see a movie, turn your phone off. Cell phone usage is never appropriate in a theater packed with people who have paid for entry and want to hear the actors – not you!

Other Situations – There are other times when courtesy can come into question with cell phone usage. During meetings at work, for example, turn the phone off. Also, don’t stick a caller on hold to text someone else – it’s just plain tacky!

There are a number of situations where cell phone usage just isn’t appropriate. From the workplace to restaurants and beyond, sometimes it’s just best to turn the ringer off. Everyone around you will be glad you did!
