There’s never enough time in the day. Work is driving you crazy and it’s impossible to relax whether you’re in the office, in your car or even at home where you are mentally preparing for the next day. If this sounds familiar, your job is stressing you out.
Common Symptoms of Stress at Work
- You don’t have much excitement or passion for life
- You feel negative or cynical
- You have low self-esteem
- You feel bored or tired all of the time
- You feel frustrated, irritable or angry
- You feel alone or alienated
- You have frequent physical ailments such as headaches or stomachaches
- You have insomnia
How Do Men Deal with it?
Men have historically followed the ‘fight or flight’ mentality. Men tend to keep feelings bottled up and avoid the situation. In order to escape (flight) a man may choose to lose himself in a physical activity such as golfing, driving or working on a home-improvement project. If that doesn’t work, a man may become extremely angry and ready to fight or have a verbal blowout.
How Do Women Deal with it?
Women typically handle stress in two ways. Their first approach to stress management is to nurture others, like their children and loved ones. The second way is by reaching out for support through friends, family, coworkers or even therapists. A woman likes to share her story and get her feelings off her chest.

Best Techniques for Handling Stressful Jobs
Get Organized – Having clutter all around you makes you feel more unorganized and forces you to take more time finding the things you need, rather than working. Get your desk in order and make a daily to-do list to help you stay on track.
Talk to Others – Politely sharing your stress with a friend, coworker or loved one may help you blow off steam and get new perspective on the situation.
Find ‘Me Time’ During the Day – Try not to skip lunch every day. Get out of the office for some fresh air. Take a coffee break. Your focus will be clearer when you return and you’ll likely get more done.
Check your Perspective – No matter what your occupation, jobs can come and go. If you’re not happy, find a new job before your stressful job gets the best of you. Your family and your health are irreplaceable.
Take a Vacation – Studies show that many Americans do not take the vacation days they are entitled to. People who take vacation days have lower stress levels and return to work feeling rested and more productive.
Get Enough Sleep – Being tired only accentuates your feelings of stress and anxiety, and makes you less capable of handling your daily work load.
Exercise – A healthy and beneficial way to burn off steam. You should do it at least three times a week to reap the benefits.
Getting your job stress level under control is a great way to ensure your overall happiness.
