The lease is signed. The move-in date is set. Chances are you even have made arrangements to turn on the utilities. But, are you really ready for your first apartment? Do you have everything you need to make your apartment a real home?

Should you find yourself stumped with these questions and are asking yourself what do I need for my first apartment, don’t worry. A first apartment checklist doesn’t have to break the bank if you know what you really need and where to find it. Creative shoppers can cut some major costs by having a list of must haves in mind and even learning to bargain shop or hunt for garage sale bargains. Savvy apartment furnishers know there are rooms that can be skimped on and others that simply cannot. When it comes to your bedroom, skimping should be out of the question.

Bedroom-Buying and Furnishing Checklist

Here’s what you’ll need to make moving to an apartment and furnishing a bedroom work out perfectly:

A plan – Should you want each room in your apartment to look picture perfect, you’ll need to have a design plan in mind. If you set a theme for the entire place or room-by-room, you’ll find decoration will be a snap. If you don’t have a particular theme that appeals, consider just setting colors for each room. This can work and will help tie things together well.

The furniture – Bedroom furniture is an absolute must. You’ll need, at the very least, a bed, dresser and perhaps a nightstand or two. If money is tight, second-hand purchases can work out very well here. You might want to buy a new mattress, but you can save money on the big stuff. Try visiting both new and used furniture stores and even shopping garage sales.

The bedding – New sheets, pillows, pillow cases, blankets and a comforter will all be needed to outfit the bed. It’s not a bad idea to have two sets of each to cover those weeks you just don’t have time to wash it all.

All the Extras

To bring your bedroom together, you might want to consider a few other purchases. You’ll need to cozy up your space and make it look finished. Linens, accessories, accents and organizational items are the last thing you need to get. Here’s a short list:

  • alarm clock
  • clothing hangers
  • lamps
  • underbed storage
  • drawer organizers
  • area rug
  • curtains and hardware
  • wall art
  • photos and frames

Getting your first apartment is a very big deal. If you want to make sure it has all the comforts of home, the bedroom is an important room not to skimp on.
