Shake up Your Workout Routine

by Sr. Editor on April 30, 2008

Boredom is the No. 1 enemy of a good workout routine. If you want to fight it off and really start having fun with exercise, it’s time to shake it up and make sure fitness remains an enjoyable pursuit.

Treadmills, exercise bikes, jogging, swimming and other basic routines can all be great for helping you get into shape. Unfortunately, they can all become a bit of a drag after a time. Even the “coolest” treadmill is likely to turn into a boring machine after weeks and months of the same old same old.

So, how can you shake it up and make workout routines fun again? The key is in variety. The best way to stay in shape and keep your interest high is to make sure new things are added to the mix from time to time. After all, we all need a change of scenery once in a while.

Three Ways to Add a Little Fun to Your Routine:

1. Signing up for fitness classes – Group classes can be a little intimidating, but once you get into the swing of things they tend to be rather fun. There is something very enjoyable about getting out and exercising with a group of people who all have the same goal in mind. Plus, thanks to some really neat new classes, this pursuit can be a blast. Try dance classes, tae bo, kick boxing and more to really shake it up. Read about the following exercise classes and check your local gym to see if they offer them:

2. Team sports – While baseball, football or tennis won’t completely replace the need to hit the pavement or swim laps, playing a team sport once in a while is a great way to shake up your routine and meet new people. Practice and game days can provide a great cardiovascular workout. Check out some of these fun team sports and see if they appeal to you:

3. Get an exercise buddy – If you’re having a tough time keeping your interest up no matter what you do, try finding a friend to exercise with. Whether you both use boring machines, run, play sports, go for bike rides, take fitness classes or just do aerobics in front of the television, the support can make a very big difference. Plus, it’s just fun to have a friend along for the ride to keep you motivated and on track.

Staying in shape is a lifelong pursuit. While machines, boring routines and other personal-use plans can go a long way, they can become stale after a while. If you really want to stick to the fitness plan, shake it up once in a while and learn to have fun with workout routines. Don’t let moving to a new apartment throw you off track either. Try searching the web for local gyms and classes – it’s a great way to stay in shape and meet new people.
