Moving Into An Apartment With Children

by Sr. Editor on September 5, 2007

A move can elicit the full gamut of emotions – excitement, anxiety, and overall terror; but it’s something that most of us will experience at least one time in our lives. Making a residential move requires energy, organization, planning, and quite a bit of patience – a tall order for one person working a full time job. But when you’re moving an entire family, the challenges become that much more, especially when moving to an apartment where space can be limited. That’s why moving to an apartment with children requires planning planning that may be above and beyond the norm.

Make Moving With Kids As Easy As Possible

  • Involve your kids in as much of the relocation process as possible. Include them in the apartment-searching and other age-appropriate tasks.
  • Have kids pack a personal box with their favorite and most special things. Let them decorate the box and personalize it so it’s easy to identify once you’ve moved.
  • Go through your child’s room with them and get let them lead as much as possible in determining what items should be kept, discarded and given to charity.

Moving with children

Raising children, working, and juggling the myriad of other activities that take place during a given day can render anyone exhausted and overwhelmed. But adding a move onto your plate can push you into a realm of stress previously not experienced. It is so important, for this reason, to be incredibly organized during the planning – and implementation – of a move.

Packing a child’s belongings

Packing for a move takes a considerable amount of time; and moving to an apartment can increase the time spent on packing. For one thing, it is often necessary to downsize significantly in order to comfortable house all of your belongings into an apartment. If this is the case, then you will need the time and space to determine which items will move with you and which will be donated or sold. Be sure that you give yourself some uninterrupted time for packing; ask a family member or friend for babysitting services so that you can focus on your packing even for a couple of hours.

Packing children’s toys

Children’s toys can become an issue when moving to an apartment, as it is not always possible to bring everything along with you. With younger children, it may be best to make the decision about individual toys without the kids. Older children, however, can be helpful in this regard as they can be responsible for sorting their own toys and helping to pack.

Packing for the plane or car ride

If you are moving to an apartment that is a distance away, take the time to pack separate bags that will house the items your children can not do without. Rather than packing a favorite blanket or stuffed animal into a box that will travel by moving van, bring it with you in some specially packed bags of personal things. If you have a plane ride or car ride ahead of you, be sure to pack games and activities for the road.

Form and Function

Finally, moving to an apartment with children may require some additional organization once the move is complete. There are some amazing organizational systems that are specially designed for small spaces on the market today; colored containers, baskets, and crates can hold toys, books, and stuffed animals. Be creative; form and function can combine to create a cozy space for children.

Apartment Moving: Choosing Moving Companies

A move can be a stressful time; perhaps filled with trepidation about making a change, and almost always filled with details that can easily overwhelm you. It’s not coincidence that moving is deemed one of the all-time most stressful events in a person’s life. Moving to an apartment can be especially stressful as it sometimes requires moving your possessions into a smaller space. Often, however, moving stress is compounded by a lack of organization and planning; in order to ensure a seamless move that entails as little unnecessary stress as possible, it is important to set certain plans in place prior to moving day. Before apartment moving you may want to consider engaging the services of a professional mover.

Choosing the right moving service

Clearly, there are different levels of movers. There are those who will literally come into your home and pack your possessions for you prior to moving the boxes to your new home. And there are also those movers that are only responsible for moving the possessions that you have packed, along with furniture. The packing service may be useful for someone who has little time on their hands, but there are several things to keep in mind. First and foremost, this kind of service obviously costs far more money than if you just hire someone to move you. Secondly, if you are moving to an apartment from a larger place, you will certainly have to downsize by weeding through your possessions. Since you will be hands-on in this capacity anyway, it may make sense to just do the packing yourself and have the professionals move you.

Choose a reputable moving company

When choosing a mover it is important to find a reputable company, as they will be handling your personal possessions. The very best way to find a trustworthy company is through the recommendations of friends and acquaintances that have used their services. Once you narrow down the scope based on word-of-mouth recommendations and price affordability, you should always meet with the person who would be coordinating your move. It’s important that they answer all of your questions and that, together you map out a workable moving schedule that is most efficient.

Flat rates and moving insurance

When it comes to moving rates, you are best served by a company that will give you a flat rate, rather than an hourly rate. An hourly rate can escalate your costs depending on what you are up against on the day of the move. You want a moving company to take their time with your belongings and not feel as though this added time will break the bank.

Finally, while you may be moving to an apartment, and may not have the quantity of possessions that a larger house move would entail, it is still vital that your belongings are protected during the move. Be sure that any moving company in which you are interested is thoroughly insured so that you are all covered on moving day.

Let’s face it; moving is a challenging experience filled with details that can easily go from numerous to overwhelming. Keeping track of everything that needs to be accomplished during a moving process can certainly be more than any one person can handle – and even many people. Because – in addition to the move that has seemingly taken over your life – you are also surely juggling work responsibilities and your myriad other daily activities.

Hire some help

Some may think that apartment moving is somehow less stressful than moving to a larger home; but the truth is something very different. Moving to an apartment can be every bit as stressful as a larger move – and sometimes more so, as you may be required to pare down belongings in order to fit into a smaller space. Whatever the case, moving – under any circumstances – can certainly be made to be far less stressful and complex by engaging the services of professionals who can handle the details while you attend to your daily life.

Professional movers will ease the stress

Professional moving companies offer services in many different capacities. There are those companies that offer moving only; meaning that you pack the boxes yourself and the movers simply take your packed boxes and furniture to your new place. There are other moving services that will pack for you and handle the moving process. This can be especially helpful if you are working a full-time job and have the money to bring in as much help you as you need to get the job done right.

Further, there are those companies that will actually work with you to outfit and organize your space; helping you face the specific challenges that come with moving to an apartment. You may have less room with which to work and a company such as this will help you set up your space to optimize both form and function.
